AngloGold Ashanti ePTW Case Study

AngloGold Ashanti is a leading global gold producer operating in 11 countries. The new Tropicana gold mine site, 330km east-northeast of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, is one of its major development projects.

Managing high risk work in a construction environment

AngloGold Ashanti needed an electronic Permit to Work (ePTW) system for the Tropicana Gold Mine construction project and was working to a tight deadline. They also required a standard authorisation process to control hazards associated with high risk works.

A new ePTW system and ensuring user competencies

The system was delivered in two phases to provide Tropicana with an ePTW and isolation management system in time for site commissioning, and the second phase - which included additional functionality like permit plot plans, permit audit management and additional control certificates – was rolled out later.

SageSURPASS was integrated with AngloGold’s training management system to manage user competencies, ensuring that only users who hold current and correct competencies are able to perform certain tasks within SageSURPASS.

The SageSURPASS Mobility Module was also configured to support AngloGold’s two-step isolation verification in the field as well as deisolation. Plant items were labelled with RFID tags which are scanned via handheld devices to confirm that the correct isolation point has been selected.

A multi-site solution

The implementation of SageSURPASS in conjunction with locking and tagging hardware ensured Permit to Work practices at Tropicana Gold Mine are standardised and have the correct controls in place. The company’s investment in configuring the system to match its corporate procedures means that AngloGold is now in a position to rapidly and easily deploy SageSURPASS at its other sites.
